Loosing your aunt

Posted in Group:

I lost my aunt on December 3,2011. This has been very difficult for me because she helped raise me as a child. In 1997 she lost her husband suddenly in a motor vehicle accident and started using drugs to deal with her grief. That began the downward spiral that lead to the family being exhausted by the constant requests for money and/or favors. I moved away from her and my family 3 years ago to be closer to my husbands family. Although they are supportive they cannot help me because none of them knew her and they don't know what to say/do. My husband only knew her for a year before we moved. I'm in nursing school and was unable to attend the memorial service because of that. My family is supposed to go spread her ashes in New Hampshire where she was from this August. I am going to that but right now this feels like a bad dream. Because of her drug use and the events surrounding her death they considered her death suspicious. The initial autopsy results say the cause of death was a heart attack. She was 49 and leaves behind a 9 year old daughter. I hadn't spoken to her since the August before her death because of her behavior. She would take conversations and turn the around to how miserable she was. I stopped calling because I couldn't deal with it and focus on school. Now i regret that decision and wish i could have been there for her when she needed me. Is there anyone who has or is going through a similar situation?

I wish I knew of some way to console your hurting heart, some way to take away your pain, but I don't. I can tell you that time lessens the hurt, it doesn't take it all away but it helps some. I understand where you are coming from on the regrets as I have regrets surrounding my dad's death too. Be sure to know that I am thinking about you and praying for you.
